Re: Choosing the first piece on a programme. I have to admit to sometimes nodding off (not at yours, of course!). I think it is a combo of being tired after a long day, having the opportunity to sit still, but also needing to get my mind and body in music mode. By the time any concert is over (unless it is REALLY bad), and often after the first piece, I am fully alert to the music, and full of energy and hope for the world. So what about starting with a short piece, just to get everyone settled in? Perhaps it's a bad idea, and I just need to have a nap before I go out!

Jonathan,
I'm having one of those nice late night moments listening to you on the first movement of the Schumann Fantasy.

Absolutely -- Schumann has always been very crunkable to me :) It was nice interviewing you for the Sun-Times earlier this year, btw. I have a friend here in Chicago who is helping work on your bro's campaign. I checked his website and he seems like my kinda fellow.

All best,
Bryant

David Dubal said that one of the few detrimental aspects of Artur Schnabel's success was pianists trying to see how many Schubert sonatas they can cram in one program. :-)

The parings of composers a pianist chooses to include are every bit as instructive as the interpretation of those composers. It's only after hearing Brahms and Shoenberg together that I realized how much they had in common.
